  • Residential Team Leader

    Lavender Grove Cares are looking for someone who knows how to make a house, a home. We are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and determined individual to work with children and young people 11-18 years old with Social, Emotional and Complex Needs.  The team will ensure that the children living within the home have the very best care, great role models and a place to call home. 


    Purpose of the role:


    To provide high quality, person-centred care to our Children and Young People often involving an understanding of a broad range of often complex social, emotional and recreational needs. 


    To recognise the potential of each Child and Young Person and to promote through actions and words the achievement of that potential. 


    To meet the individual care and support needs of the Child and Young Person using the service in a way that promotes, dignity, privacy, safety and independence. 


    To safeguard our children and young people by way of risk assessing, protecting their holistic welfare and ensure appropriate information sharing occurs in line with Lavender Grove’s safeguarding policy. 


    To ensure our residential home is a safe, welcoming environment where children can enjoy, achieve and thrive in to reach their full potential. 


    Duties and responsibilities: 


    Physical/Emotional/Social Needs of Young People 


     • To assist in the smooth running of the home, being part of a multidisciplinary team promoting a warm, caring, safe and enjoyable environment. 


     • To have responsibility for safeguarding and promoting individual rights, providing good quality care which is free from oppression and where differences are respected and valued.


     • Assist the management of the home in developing the skills and potential of Young Person’s Support Workers.


     • Support the Registered Manager with the effective and efficient running of shifts.


     • Monitor and maintain administrative requirements, ensuring that the outcome meets the standards set out in children’s legislation, and the homes working practices.


     • Oversee, supervise and develop the skills of staff in their daily working practices.


     • Ensure the delivery of all Young Person’s Support Workers areas and responsibilities.


     • Ensure staff are aware of and deliver the support required to ensure the life chance opportunities of children and young people are met in relation to their social, educational, leisure, emotional, physical and cultural needs.


     • In conjunction with the Management to work proactively with and direct the team within the daily routine and agreed structures of the house, to include for example day to day parenting responsibilities, undertaking daily household responsibilities such as domestic chores, cooking, shopping, taking young people to appointments/meetings, planning out the day and participation in activities with the young people and supporting in homework. 


     • Undertaking keyworker/co-worker tasks and being responsible for the welfare of those children and young children requiring additional experience and expertise. 


     • To work effectively with and advise on complex cases and situations, including key work, successfully integrating theory and practice.


     • To prepare individual risk assessment and placement plans for children. 


     • To work in partnership with parents, social workers, agencies and other professionals linked to the young person’s care plan to effectively fulfil the responsibility of parenting the young people, ensuring the maintenance of family contact where appropriate.


     • To adhere to Lavender Grove Cares Policies and Procedures with particular note to Safeguarding, Whistle- blowing, Complaints, Equality and Diversity. 


     • Promote and actively encourage the delivery of a safe, structured and nurturing environment, promoting the young person’s independence and developing their life skills.


     • To assist and supervise in the continual assessment of the needs of the children and young people and to identify and prepare specific development plans to ensure the most appropriate service provision.


     • To contribute to the development of appropriate relationships with and between staff, young people and other stakeholders.


     • To engage in the implementation of additional techniques and practices supporting improvements in child-care.


     • Encourage positive development of each Child/ Young Person’s interests and attitudes.


     • To promote, safeguard and protect the welfare of each Child and Young Person. 


     • Establish and maintain positive and trusting relationships with the Young People that will promote their sense of security.


     • Provide firm, consistent and fair boundaries in respect of their behaviour and employ appropriate and agreed sanctions. 


     • Ensure that appropriate medical help is provided in line with individual care plans/ cases of illness and accidents. 


     • Promote the development of an emotionally and physically healthy lifestyle for Children and Young People. Assist Young People in the development and sustaining of positive social networks with adults and other peer groups.


     • To organise and participate in group activities and group holidays. 


     • To assist in the provision/preparation of meals in the home.


     • To assist and support our Young People through the process of leaving care. 


     • Encourage our young people to develop their full educational and vocational attainment.


     • Observe and assess the behaviour of our Young People in our home, using formal and informal keywork sessions to aid positive self-worth and identity.  


     • To engage in and supervise day to day care practices, creating an accepting environment conducive to the positive personal development of each Young Person. 


     • To undertake in planning for and preparation of Young People for admission or discharge, to and from residential care. This may include professional negotiations to ensure that the Young Person transfers to an environment stable for that individual and one where he can cope or be assisted to cope. 


    Team Membership


     • To be part of a team which wants to achieve the highest standards of care for the children and young people.


     • To participate and support management in the coordination of a comprehensive staff training and development programme to ensure that you/staff are equipped with the necessary skills and levels of expertise to meet the needs of the young people.


     • To work with the Management to ensure that all staff work together and with others towards meeting the emotional and physical needs of the young people and planning for positive outcomes.


     • To provide formal supervision to individual members of staff as directed by the Registered Manager, in line with Lavender Grove policy and the Children’s Home (England) Regulations 2015.


     • Where required, deputise in the absence of the management of the home. 


     • Where required attend reviews and or meetings. 


     • To assist client need and ensure that all Young People have care plans and to develop, implement and review packages of care.


     • To work as a member of a team, ensuring that the reception, on-going care and discharge of Young People is undertaken in accordance with the statutory framework and policies & procedures of the organisation.


    6.   To attend and contribute to staff meetings; this involves participation and collaboration with other staff in the provision of care to enable the development of the home. 


    7. To work closely and in co-operation with social work staff, specialists and other professional agencies in accordance with the role and function of the home. To develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with families and other agencies. 


    8. Attend LAC reviews/ PEPs/ YOS/ ECHP and other forums where residents’ needs are being considered.


    9. To support less experienced staff as part of their programme of induction to the work and operation of the home in conjunction with the organisation’s policies and procedures.


    10. Undertake a rota-based system of shifts thus ensuring the children and young people have Young Person’s Support Workers with them over a 24-hour period.  (There may be occasional sleep in duties//waking night duties but these will be requests and will be compensated).


    11. Make positive use of supervision. 


    12. Participate in the staff appraisal scheme. 


    13. To show a willingness to undertake appropriate training as part of overall professional development. 


    14. Any other such duties as may be required from time to time by the Senior Management Team or their authorised representatives.


    Administrative 


    1.  Ensure that all administrative requirements of the home are maintained in such a way that they are compliant with good childcare practices, home procedures and company policies.


    2. To undertake routine administrative tasks and provide written reports and maintain the Young Person’s file as required by the organisation’s policies and procedures.


    2. Compile reports, including Review, Progress and Incident reports.


    3. To complete ongoing and timely casework updates and participate in the administrative functions of the home. 


    4. Ensure all clinical practices and medication processes within the home are conducted in line with the agreed Care Plan.


    5. To ensure that complaints from children and young people are dealt with immediately in accordance with the Lavender Grove’s Complaint’s Procedure.


    6. To undertake financial management and recording of day to day petty cash maintenance in accordance with Lavender Grove’s policies and procedures. 


    7. To carry out duties in accordance with the health & safety at work act, adopting safe working practices, in accordance with Lavender Grove’s policies and procedures. 


    8. Maintain a clean and safe environment; ensure that the physical state of the building is maintained to a high standard and that all repair/maintenance problems are reported promptly.


    9. To ensure that all requirements for recording and record keeping are adhered to and kept up   to date (both hard copy and electronic processes).


    10.All duties and responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with Lavender Grove’s policies and procedures.


    Special Conditions 


    This post requires the holder to do shifts over a day period which include early morning and evening work, (with potential sleep-in and waking night to cover staff absence for which an additional payment is made). The post holder also is required to work weekends as part of a rota and Bank Holidays.


    On occasions you may be requested to change your rota at a given notice as per your contract, to ensure the contingencies of the service are covered. This may also include covering an additional sleep-in / waking night duty as an emergency measure. 


    In accordance with the guidelines on Health and Safety, to accept responsibility for working within these guidelines and reporting any concerns to the Registered Manager. 


    To undertake such other duties appropriate to the grade of the post and the needs of the Home such as decorating, gardening in order to develop and maintain service delivery.

     • To be responsible for the security of the premises, undertaking tours of the building at hourly intervals to ensure that all the residents are accounted for and the building and grounds are free from intruders. 


     • To respond appropriately to callers (by telephone and in person) during the night e.g. the police.


     • To conduct fire safety checks.


     • To alert the senior member of staff to any problems that occur during the night and assist in dealing with them e.g. by telephoning the emergency services, parents, police or other professionals, accompanying a young person to hospital, helping to return a young person to his/her room and completing incident reports. 


     • To work as a member of a team, ensuring that the reception, on-going care and discharge of Young People is undertaken in accordance with the statutory framework and policies & procedures of the organisation.


     • To contribute to the development of care provision for children and young people undertaken by the Young Person’s Support Workers.
